Prepare to Join

U.S. Navy Sailors receive haircuts at Recruit Training Command, also known as Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois.

Congratulations on deciding to apply to join the Navy. You’re about to embark on an amazing journey, but first, take a look at the information below. Whether you want to enlist or become an officer, these resources will help you maximize your score on the application test and prepare for the adventure ahead. Just ask your recruiter which tests are required for the program you’re interested in.

Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

The ASVAB evaluates knowledge across a wide variety of skills and topics. Both the overall score as well as individual line scores are used to determine eligibility for specific Navy enlisted careers.

Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) and Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB)

The OAR is required for most officer specialties and includes sections on Math, English and Mechanical Comprehension. Pilot and Naval Flight Officer Candidates take three additional sections on aerodynamics, aviation history and spatial recognition—the OAR plus these three sections make up the ASTB.

Below are some additional resources you may find helpful.

Improve Your Test Taking Skills

There will be many opportunities to advance in rank, earn special designations and qualify for new skills. Getting the skills to ace tests will set you up for success.

Doing well on the ASVAB can present you with more career opportunities in the Navy. Khan Academy is a free educational resource that offers practice exercises and lessons to help you up your score. Prepare at your own pace with Khan Academy.
