Working Environments
The military’s largest health-care facility, the Naval Medical Center San Diego, employs over 6,000 professionals who deliver the highest quality health care to veterans, Active Duty servicemembers and their families everyday.
San Diego
A Thriving Hub of Military Health Care
From its humble origins as a tent dispensary in 1917 to the current technologically advanced facility, the mission of the Naval Medical Center in San Diego has remained constant: to provide the finest medical care available.
In 2006, 30 nurses and Hospital Corpsmen from the hospital’s hematology/oncology unit were awarded “best team” by Advance for Nurses magazine, the nation’s largest health-care publication.
“I think (the award) is testimony to the power of teamwork and our staff here at San Diego. It really pulls together everyone, from housekeeping to the nurses to the Corpsmen. We are all here to take care of our patients, and this is recognition of what teamwork can do and produce.”— LCDR Carma Erickson-Hunt
Educational Opportunities Abound
Nicknamed “Balboa,” the military’s largest health-care facility has a team of more than 6,000 professionals who provide outstanding health services. To put that into perspective, the staff fills nearly 8,000 prescriptions each day as they serve the Navy and Marine Corps’ largest Active Duty community and their families. And still, the focus is on quality, not quantity.
Naval Medical Center San Diego is also the Navy’s most active teaching hospital, where graduate medical education programs are conducted in everything from anesthesiology and dermatology to orthopedics and hospital pharmacy. Fellowships are offered in at least 10 different specialties. The Center is affiliated with the University of California, San Diego, and many prestigious institutions throughout the United States.
Setting a Standard
The Naval Medical Center operates a network of clinics located at area military installations too. These clinics provide emergency and ambulatory care to the Active Duty populations of all San Diego-based ships and shore commands. The center also has five medical mobilization teams — including the hospital ship USNS Mercy – and two Fleet surgical teams.
Whether it’s working in the San Diego community or deploying for the latest humanitarian mission, Naval Medical Center San Diego takes pride in providing top-quality health services and setting the standard for Navy Medicine.
