Surface Warfare Mission: To Protect the Fleet

With lightning-quick communications, space-based radar systems, precision weapons and advanced engineering systems, the Navy’s surface warfare ships are considered the “tip of the spear” in battle. They are the ships you want with you when enemies are submerged, flying above you or land based.

Today’s surface warfare ships include cruisers, destroyers and frigates.

No carrier, cargo/supply ship or oil tanker proceeds into an area where enemy action is possible without the faster, more agile surface warfare ships to provide antiaircraft, antisubmarine or antiship protective measures.

DID YOU KNOW?

The first destroyer was built more than 100 years ago. It was called a torpedo-ship destroyer and it was used to rid the sea of the enemy’s deadly torpedo ships. The name was later shortened to destroyer.
